My dog is suffering from sinus congestion in his face and
in his chest
Dog Question: my dog is suffering from sinus congestion in
his face and in his chest. When he breathes I hear a clicking
sound or crackling sound. His temp is 101.7 and he has been
taking benedryl and an antibiotic. The vet is not equipped to
take a xray to confirm pneumonia but I think being from the
south it is sinus. What can I give him to dry this congestion
up and give him some peace. Today is the only day I have seen
him cough up mucus, the rest of the time he isn't coughing. It
was not green or brown it was thin but it was a good bit of
mucus. What do you suggest?
Hi Nichole,
Sorry to hear about your dog.
If your vet thinks it might be pneumonia an
anti-inflammatory might help the dog feel better. The vet
should auscultate the lungs, which is another way to tell if
there is pneumonia, you don't necessarily need an x-ray.
Also, can he do blood work?
Nebulization, which is the inhalation of highly humidified
air to help break up the thick secretions and mucus that are
involved in the immune response. Coupage is a technique of
gently thumping the chest to help break up the fluid in the
lungs' small airways to allow them to be coughed up.
Nebulization and coupage are used in the hospital but can be
taught to you by your veterinarian or the veterinary staff for
home use.
So try increasing the humidity, coupage, and talk to your
vet if you don't see improvement soon with his course of
treatment.
