Barn Cats Have Watery Eyes
Cat Question: We live on an acreage and have several barn
cats. I've noticed they have been sneezing and coughing and
have watery eyes. Their appetite is very good although one is
thin and bones. It eats as much if not more than the others but
it's so thin and has watery puffy eyes and nasal discharge. Our
little dog is in contact with them and is starting to sneeze
too. I have wormed the cats for round worm in their food... Any
ideas? I know their just barn cats but I'm worried about them.
They are all female but one and he doesn't seem sick.
Hi Scout,
Sorry to hear about your cat.
Is sounds like these cats have feline herpes virus and
possibly feline calicivirus as well (they are not contagious to
you or your dog)
If severe they should be given oral antibiotic drops
(clavamox) and vaccinated against this.
Most likely this will pass, but will show up every once in a
while due to the nature of this disease.
This is a very common disease and most cats recover just
fine.
