Yorky shitzu mix very aggressive when anyone comes to the door - what can be done to stop her? 

Dog Question: We have a yorky shitzu mix. She is very aggressive when anyone comes sto the door (goes into the red zone)She barks at everyone and everything. If a stranger comes into the house she will be very aggressive for a period of time then she will calm down. Is there something we can give her to make her less aggressive? They give things to people to calm them down. I would love to be able to take her without her going off at every person or car she comes across.

Sorry to hear about your aggressive dog.  A lot of people have trouble with these little guys.

Giving it medication to sedate it will not solve the problem long term.  You need to re-train the dog. 

I'm not an expert at dog training so try and find some books to help you.

If it were my dog though I would let it know that there are consequences when it barks. 

If it barks, it should get put in a crate or locked in a room immediately until he calms down and then gets let out.

You have to let the dog know you are in charge.  Once the dog knows this it will work to please you. 

Set the rules and enforce them.  Dogs love to push boundaries so you have to always be firm. 

Also be sure to reward the dog for positive behavior.  If it does manage to meet someone without barking, let it know it did a good job.
