Stafford terrier that is tearing up his tail

Dog Question: My daughter has a stafford terrier that is tearing up his tail by chewing on it..he actually takes chunks off of it. it is bleeding..she called a vet and they said it would be 1500.00 to take the tail off.  My daughter is in college and doesn't have this kind of money but loves her little baby..he is five years old and his name is spud..any suggestions?

Sorry to hear about your dog.

You could try a couple of things.

E-collars should work.  Also you could bandage the tail with tape and spray something called "bitter apple" on it to give it a bad taste.

If the tail is bleeding I would watch out for infections and keep the tail clean and put some antibiotic ointment on the tail, or see the vet if possible.
