How often does a dog come in heat?

Dog Question: How often does a dog come in heat? I have a small mixed breed female dog that I have a hard time keeping her from becoming pregnant, she just came out of heat and hopefully I won't have to deal with that situation any time soon again. Also does it change a dogs behavior mutch after being spayed? She has an unbelievable personality, and I love her to death! Thank You for your time.

Most dogs do not have a personality change after being spayed. 

Spaying a dog greatly reduces the chance she could get mammary cancer though.

Dogs only come into heat a couple of times a year, so it is not too often.

But I would get her spayed for the long term health benefits.
