Can Hawks Pick Up Small Dogs?

Dog Question: Hi Doctor, I will be getting 2 adult female manchester toy terrier one 10lbs and one 8lbs. I live in a boston suburb. I have large yard and many birds that visit. Do I need to worry about Hawks attacking my little dogs?

Hi Melanie,

Hawks usually can't pick up things greater than 5 pounds.

But they can attack quickly.  If you have a hawk in the area I would go out with your dogs.

But they sound big enough that a hawk would not bother with them.
